Message from Bridget Phillipson MP, Secretary of State for Education
Children growing up in our country deserve the best start in life, nothing less.
That’s why I’m pleased to let you know that in the first week back in Parliament, Labour has brought forward legislation that will improve the household finances of families and the life chances of children across the country.
The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill is a landmark piece of legislation that puts our plan to give children the best start in life into action.
The Bill will:
- Drive high and rising standards in schools, putting more qualified, expert teachers in classrooms and teaching a cutting edge curriculum
- Cut the cost of sending children to school with free breakfast clubs and a cap on the number of branded school uniform items
- Stop vulnerable children falling through the cracks through landmark reforms to safeguarding
We’re taking these steps so we can deliver on Labour’s mission to break down the barriers to opportunity – to sever the link between background and success.
That means where you come from doesn’t determine where you end up, and that if you work hard, you should be able to get on in life.
Through our Plan for Change, I am determined that this Labour government will make this principle a reality.
Thank you,
Bridget Phillipson MP
