While I did write about their outstanding win against Milton Keynes last week, given Crawley Town FC’s outstanding win in the League One play-offs final against Crewe Alexandra, it would be unforgivable if I didn’t use my column today to recognise this fantastic achievement by the club or acknowledge the benefit for the town of being promoted to a higher football league.
So, many congratulations to all those involved in making Sunday the huge success it was. Crawley Town has never played at Wembley before and to see all the terraces decked out in red (they’re Crewe’s colours as well) was a lovely sight to behold!
I know there was a large contingent of councillors who joined the many thousands of Crawley fans who were at Wembley. The build up and atmosphere was definitely evident even through the television screen, it was such a great buzz.
Crawley Borough Council is very open to organising a celebration with the football club if they wish to join us, but give them a chance.
I think we have to remember that this has been a bit of a whirlwind, with a lot happening within a short period of time. The club have had to use that time first concentrating on winning the games and then on their own personal celebration with the fans, the latter which happened on Monday.
At some point, the players (whose season was already extended by this) also need to go on holiday while they have the opportunity.
Many clubs elsewhere more used to such success also frequently enter into negotiations about public celebrations weeks, if not months, beforehand, so bear in mind that with everything happening in a whirl it may take a little longer to arrange but we certainly are aware of local feeling!
It was a stunning day, and one thing I really value is this event has brought the whole town together. It has been a great advertisement for the town and its people.
I know we will move from strength to strength and Crawley Borough Council will continue to support that magnificent community spirit.
